Leonora Volkert

Leonora Volkert, born in Rich Valley, MN on May 14, 1910 to Walter and Eleanor Schaar Volkert, passed on October 4, 2009 at the age of 99.She attended Johnson High School in St. Paul and graduated from Winona State College with a degree in Elementary Education. During the first years of her teaching career, she taught in one room schools, and later taught primary grades at Salem Hills in Inver Grove Heights. This school was located about three miles from Emmanuel Church where her great-grandfather, J. Nicolas Volkert served in 1872. Leonora retired in 1974 after 45 years of teaching.She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Frances Chamberlain, Irma Wiediger; brother Harold Volkert; niece Audrey Friberg; nephew Russel Volkert. Leonora is survived by her sister Edna Ohmann; nieces Shirley Johnson, Rita Walker, Bette Volkert, and nephew Richard Volkert.The Funeral Service, officiated by Rev. John Moe will be held 11:00am Friday, October 9, 2009 at St. John�s Lutheran Church � Rich Valley, 14385 Blaine Av. East, Rosemount, MN 55068 with visitation held at church after 9:30am Friday until time of service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The pallbearers are Lloyd Johnson, Todd Walker, Jon Olson, James Friberg, Richard Volkert, and Richard Ozment.
